Design Diaries: A Virtual Design Kitchen and Dining Refresh

The Assignment

Our recent project involved a comprehensive kitchen renovation, aiming to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal. The client sought to enhance their kitchen's look and feel without breaking the bank. Key upgrades included a new island, built-in sideboard with glass uppers, updated cabinet fronts, and fresh dining chairs, light fixtures, and window treatments. The challenge was to create a cohesive design that balanced style and budget, while keeping the existing L-shaped layout, appliances, floor, and large dining table.

The Key Factors

Several critical factors guided our renovation strategy:

  • Budget Considerations: The client was open to various levels of investment, from maintaining the existing Santa Cecilia granite to replacing it if necessary.

  • Material Choices: We needed to select materials and finishes that were both durable and aesthetically pleasing, especially given the presence of young children.

  • Design Coordination: Ensuring harmony between the new and existing elements was paramount. This included coordinating countertop surfaces, cabinet colors, and hardware.

  • Functionality: The design had to enhance the kitchen's usability, from seating arrangements to storage solutions.

The Process

  1. Consultation and Planning: The process began with an in-depth consultation to understand the client's needs and preferences. This included discussing the budget, preferred styles, and specific requirements for the space.

  2. Service Package Selections: Once we understood the design scope, budget and the legacy products we discussed the different design package options to fit the budget and clients need. This was a perfect fit for our Virtual Design Essentials Package.

  3. Design Proposals: I curated several design options, focusing on budget-friendly yet stylish choices. For instance, we considered keeping the Santa Cecilia granite while replacing all cabinet fronts with a new style and color, new lighting, new hardware, and even backsplash.

  4. 2D Design: We created detailed 2D designs to provide a rough visual of the mockups and pre-selections. This step helped the client envision the final look and make informed decisions about the design elements.

  5. Custom Features and Implementation: The client’s husband was handy (to say the least!) and was instrumental in crafting custom elements like the built-in sideboard and building the new kitchen island from scratch. The renovation proceeded smoothly, with the clients handling the construction and installation of new elements. We ensured that every detail, from cabinet hardware to light fixtures, aligned with the overall design vision (and budget).

The Result

The result is a stunning transformation that marries style with practicality. The new island and built-in sideboard add both functionality and visual interest, while the updated cabinet fronts and hardware provide a fresh, cohesive look. The dining area feels more open and inviting, thanks to the new chairs and light fixtures. The carefully selected paint color and window treatments enhance the room's warmth and charm.

The client is thrilled with their new kitchen, particularly with how we managed to incorporate the existing Santa Cecilia granite, significantly reducing costs without compromising on style. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design and strategic material choices can deliver remarkable results, even on a budget.

Tips for Your Renovation

  • Mix and Match: Don't be afraid to mix materials and finishes. Combining butcher block with quartz or granite can add texture and interest.

  • Custom Touches: Incorporate custom-built elements to make your space unique.

  • Budget-Friendly Updates: Focus on key elements like cabinet fronts and hardware to refresh your kitchen without a complete overhaul.
