Design Diaries: Beachy Boho Master Bath Renovation

A smart, stylish master bath renovation that proves layout is everything.

We love a good before-and-after—but this project was more than just pretty finishes. The original bathroom was cramped, awkward, and not doing the homeowner any favors. She came to Studio Lee ready for change, and trusted us to rethink the layout, elevate the style, and make the most of every inch. What started as a dark, dated space is now a light-filled, beachy-boho retreat—and proof that thoughtful design can completely transform how a home feels and functions.

The Problems

Before diving into any finish selections, we took a close look at what wasn’t working in this primary bathroom. The layout was limiting, the space felt visually heavy, and the features didn’t support the homeowner’s daily routine.

Here’s what we were working against:

  • A dark, enclosed shower insert that made the space feel closed-in

  • A single-sink vanity stretched along a wall with wasted counter space

  • A toilet placed in full view of the entry—zero privacy

  • A tiny linen closet taking up valuable square footage

  • A walk-in closet hidden behind the vanity wall, breaking up the flow

  • Minimal natural light and no real sense of calm or style

The Assignment

Once we mapped out the issues, the homeowner gave us a clear (and fun) wishlist: create a bright, functional master bath that felt both beautiful and intentional.

The project goals included:

  • A double vanity for shared function

  • A dedicated makeup vanity that didn’t feel like an afterthought

  • A walk-in tiled shower with a more open and airy feel

  • A more private toilet area

  • A layout that flowed better, without losing closet space

  • A budget-conscious approach to materials—no overspending on the bones

The best part? She fully trusted the design process and was open to big changes. That’s when the magic happens.

The Solution

To make everything work harder (and look better), we flipped the floor plan and moved key architectural elements to unlock the room’s potential.

Here’s what we did:

  • Slid the entry door down the wall to reclaim valuable square footage

  • Moved the walk-in closet to the left side of the room for better access and balance

  • Placed a custom makeup vanity directly in front of the door—creating a beautiful focal point

  • Relocated the shower to the back right corner and opened it up with light, bright tile

  • Added a warm wood double vanity with shiplap detail for texture and a beachy-boho vibe

  • Selected a slate-look porcelain tile in a deep, moody blue-gray for the floors

  • Chose matte black plumbing and lighting with farmhouse/schoolhouse influence for contrast

  • Styled the space with sea glass vases, greenery, and natural stone to keep things fresh and grounded

I knew I wanted a more functional space, but I didn’t know it could look this good too. Erica took everything I said and turned it into something I couldn’t have even pictured. I use every part of this bathroom now—and I love how it feels like me. I will be recommending her to anyone I know!

Designer Take

What made this project so rewarding wasn’t just the transformation—it was the trust. This homeowner came in with a clear vision, but also with an open mind. She gave me the freedom to work with the existing footprint, and that flexibility allowed us to unlock a layout that worked way harder without overcomplicating the construction. She was even willing to let go of a few bigger wishlist items to make space for what really mattered.

In the end, we created a spacious walk-in closet, carved out a dedicated makeup vanity, and brought in the beachy, chill-but-chic aesthetic she was craving.

This is exactly why working with a designer early in the process matters. When there's trust and collaboration, we can make the space work beautifully—even within real-world limits. If you're on the fence about whether it's worth it… it is.
