Living with Lee: Why I Design in Neutrals (and Eat My Colors)

Get to know the designer and her take on color in the first edition of the Living with Lee Series.

When people see my work at Studio Lee, they often ask me, “Why don’t you use more color in your designs?” It’s a fair question, especially when bold palettes are often seen as a mark of creativity in the design world. But for me, home is where calm begins, and the use of soft, neutral tones plays a huge role in creating that peace.

Bringing the Outside In

In my approach to Organic Modern Design, I focus on simplicity, natural textures, and neutral palettes that mirror the outdoors. This doesn’t mean I’m anti-color, but I prefer to bring the shades of nature inside through materials and textures rather than bright hues on the walls. Stone countertops, wooden accents, and soft textiles create a space that feels grounded and connected to the earth. My goal is for a home to be soothing—a place where you can retreat from the noise of the world.

Why Neutral?

Neutrals are timeless. They offer flexibility and allow spaces to evolve as we do. A neutral foundation means that you can always layer in personality through art, plants, or even seasonal decor, without your home feeling overwhelming or cluttered. A neutral backdrop also makes it easier to spotlight textures and craftsmanship—two elements that are central to my designs.

But while my home stays soft and neutral, my plate? That’s where the color comes in!

Eating My Colors

I like to joke that I’d rather eat my colors than be surrounded by them. My passion for health and simple living extends beyond design into the kitchen. My diet is packed with vibrant, nutrient-dense, naturally grown foods. Think bright green leafy vegetables, juicy berries, and rich golden sweet potatoes.

This mix of neutral spaces and colorful, rich meals is how I maintain balance in my life. In many ways, I view design and food as two sides of the same coin—they’re both about nourishment. One feeds the soul, and the other fuels the body.

Nature as Inspiration

At the end of the day, both nature and food inspire my design choices. I want my home to feel as nurturing and balanced as the meals I prepare. That’s why I stick to neutrals at home, while my kitchen and life stay full of color.

So, the next time you wonder why Studio Lee designs don’t lean toward bold color choices, just know that my design philosophy is all about creating balance, comfort, and natural beauty—in the spaces we live in and the foods we eat.

My question for you: How do you create balance in your home and life?
